Special Edition Blog: Art institute 2

Chuck Close, Self portrait, 2001.

Craft: This piece is a typical forward self portrait shot, but the facial expression makes it more interesting then a typical photograph. The blur of the bottom and also the contrasts make the photograph pop more.
Concept: The concept of this I think is to spark interest in this photo due to the detail being shown and the contrast of the background with the figure.
Composition: The composition, like I have said before is to make the audience interested, and put a little twist on the self portrait that so many have done before. It shows every detail of the face, and blurs out towards the bottom to let the viewer know that the main focus is the face and nothing else.

week 15

special edition blog: sxu art gallery solina hicks

Craft: for these pieces of art done by Sister Solina, she basically said that she did these pieces out of feeling not thought process. She didn't really have any technique that she was favorable to, but she did what she felt right. The first piece of art, the flowers, was done in oil paint on canvas, while the other was done in mosaic tiles. They are both obviously very well crafted and put together greatly, and are extremely attractive pieces of art.
Concept: the concept of these pieces of art were again quite vague according to Sister Solina, because she just did what she was feeling at that moment. She said that she thought flowers were a great example of light, when the rest of the world is dark. She also did several pieces on holy figures and Catholic symbols as well. She felt that these pieces were interesting and also very important to her life, so she did art accordingly. The concept of the bright flowers coming out of the dark was extremely inspiring because it gives a sense of hope, that not all is lost. The mosaic tiles are very well crafted, and done according to her beliefs in Mary and the Holy Spirit. There were several pieces of crosses and the Holy Spirit, etc. that she enjoyed to paint.
Composition: The compositional arrangements for most of the pieces that Sister Solina Hicks did were of either flowers or Holy concepts. The flower painting, was done in oil and has very bright and vibrant colors with a dark background, relating to her concept that Sister Solina had discussed. The mosaic was of a Holy figure, probably Mary, and done in tiles with the figure being the main focus in the middle of the canvas. She displays very clearly that this is a Holy figure and uses several crosses and holy spirit references in her pieces of art.

Craft: For this craft of Monet's "Charing Cross Bridge," Monet uses his theme of painting throughout this piece. He has a consistent painterly quality throughout his pieces, and he puts his art in a fuzzy, almost dream like way. His colors are soft and consistent throughout the piece, and not necessarily realistic. It is not quite abstract, but also not exactly detailed either. He uses oil for this piece, as he does several other pieces that he has painted.
Concept: The concept of these pieces seem to be different variations of land
scapes according to Monet's style. This piece, is done in light pastels and is in an interesting viewpoint and unrealistic color
s. The piece seems to look like it is in a sort of fog, or there is a glazing over it, and the paint is very thick and blotchy. This is Monet's style, and it works very well because it is not necessarily a realistic painting, but it does display nice views of landscaping, where as you can still tell what the painting is supposed to be portraying.
Composition: The composition of this piece is at an interesting viewpoint, and also displaying pastel colors and making the bridge look like it is in some sort of fog or glaze. It is a very appealing painting and very calming and also makes it unclear as to which time of day it is, which is very compositionall
y interesting.

Craft: For this bowl of fruit done by Caravaggio, the piece was done in oil on canvas. The colors are extremely contrasted, brin
ging out the brightes
t colors in the piece. The peaches
and the cherries really stand out most in this painting, and it is extremely eye catching and realistic. This was the style at the time this painting was done, and it was the goal of the artists to craft their paintings to the best of their abilities and realistically. His craft goes beyond that,
by punching out the whites and making the contrast extreme, forcing the co
lors to look vibrant and attractive.
Concept: The concept of this piece is to make the painting look really realistic, but at the same time putting a twist on it. The whites are punched out extremely and makes the contrast high, and so all the detail and color pop out and are really eye catching and bright. The contrast makes the painting look even more realistic and interesting.
Composition: The composition is done very well, with most of the canvas covered. Your eye travels from one corner to the other,
with something to look at any where you look. This painting is very interesting and eye catching and extremely realistic, revealing the talents of this artist to an extreme.

week 12

craft: for the craft of my next spreads, I am going to make sure that the theme stays consistent to the others, while still keeping it interesting.
concept: the concept is going to be for the same, keeping the magazine simple while also interesting to the eye for the readers.
composition: the composition is going to continue simply and hopefully make a very well laid out magazine in the end.
